The city of Medford wants you and a few others


The town of Medford hopes this adage rings true: “If you can’t beat them, join them.

The mayor and city council are looking for people to sit on various boards, commissions and committees. Applications will be accepted until October 31, 2021.

If you wish to apply, you must either maintain physical residence within the Medford Urban Growth Limit or own a business or real estate within the limit.

The following information was released today.

ARTS COMMISSION (3-year term): three fixed-term positions (terms expire on 31/01/2025). Meets monthly on matters relating to the selection, acquisition, restoration and preventive maintenance of public art. Also advises City Council with respect to the promotion of the arts, encouragement of the arts and artistic performance to help foster broad participation and understanding of the arts and their value to the Medford community.

AUDIT COMMITTEE (4-year term): A fixed-term position (term expiring on 01/31/2026). Meets once a year. The committee ensures that the auditor of the city’s financial statements is truly independent from city management; provides perspective on matters related to internal controls and the audit of financial statements; and provides a communication link between management, the independent auditor and city council.

The post is free. The member must have experience in reviewing audits, banking and / or financial reports.

BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE (3-year term): two fixed-term positions (terms expire on 01/31/2025). Meets monthly. The committee advises the Transportation Commission on plans and issues related to non-motorized transportation in the city of Medford. Candidates are sought to represent the interests of pedestrians, the interests of cyclists and other non-motorized modes of transportation.

BUDGET COMMITTEE (4-year term): three full-term positions (terms expire 31/01/2026). Meets mainly in the spring to review the city’s budget document before submitting its recommendation to City Council. The appointed member will also sit on the budget committee of the Medford Urban Renewal Agency.

CEMETERY COMMISSION (3-year term): two full-term positions (terms expire 31/01/2025) and one partial-term position (term expires 31/01/2023). Meets monthly. The Commission makes recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Commission regarding the funding and operation of Eastwood Cemetery. The Commission is also working to secure donations and bequests for the Cemetery Trust Fund.

COMMISSION ON ACCESS, DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION (3-year term): two fixed-term positions (terms expire on 01/31/2025). Meets monthly. The Commission advises city council on access, diversity, equity and inclusion strategies that strengthen ties and improve success in various community groups and with city government.

COMMUNITY SERVICES & DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION (3-year term): four full-term positions (terms expire 31/01/2025). Meets monthly. The Commission administers the City General Fund Grant program and acts as an advisor to the City Council on the proper implementation of the Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) program, related programs and statutory responsibilities.

An opening for each category: representative of affordable housing, lived experience of homelessness, representative of the educational institution and member in general.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF HOSPITAL ESTABLISHMENTS (5-year term): One full-term position (term expiring 31/01/2027). Meets only on convocation, generally once a year. The Council acts as an intermediary that allows non-profit hospitals to issue tax-free bonds.

HOUSING ADVISORY COMMISSION (3-year term): three fixed-term positions (terms expire on 31/01/2025). Meets monthly. The Commission acts as an adviser to City Council on matters affecting housing development relating to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program in the City of Medford.

One opening for each category: real estate agent or operator of multi-family housing, construction and development representative and ordinary member.

COMMITTEE ON BENCHMARKS AND HISTORICAL PRESERVATION (4-year term): Two fixed-term positions (terms expire on 01/31/2026). Meets monthly. The Commission is the approving authority for revisions to the historical plan and exceptions or modifications; investigation of any building, structure or other physical object in the city, which is of historical importance; institutes and supports programs and projects which advance the historic policy of the city of Medford.

PARKING COMMITTEE (3-year term): two fixed-term positions (terms expire on 01/31/2025). Meets monthly. The Committee advises the Transport Commission on matters related to parking in the central business district.

A position must be filled by a business owner / owner, a company employee or a resident of the central business district and a position is free.

PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION (3-year term): three fixed-term positions (terms expire 31/01/2025) and one partial-term position (term expires 31/01/2024). Meets monthly. The Commission advises the Council on questions relating to the acquisition and development of public parks, leisure facilities, greenways and spaces.

PLANNING COMMISSION (4-year term): Two fixed-term positions (terms expire on 01/31/2026). Meets twice a month. The Commission is the approving authority for zone changes, planned unit developments, conditional use permits, exceptions and land divisions, etc. ; makes recommendations and suggestions to City Council and other public authorities on matters relating to zoning, growth and development in the City of Medford.

POLICE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (3-year term): four full-term positions (terms expire 31/01/2025). Meets quarterly. The Police Advisory Committee helps the police service explore solutions to community problems and serve as a forum for community members to seek redress for unresolved police complaints.

One opening for each category: resident citizen of district 2, resident citizen of district 4, a member representing the minority community and a member representing the business community.

SITE MAP & ARCHITECTURAL COMMISSION (4-year term): Two fixed-term positions (terms expire on 01/31/2026). Meets twice a month. The Board is the approving authority for the site plan and architectural review, reviewing the architecture, landscaping, signage and any other improvement of new development projects and existing structures.

A position must be filled by a licensed contractor; a post is on the run. When selecting the position in general, preference is given to applicants with experience in engineering, architecture, landscaping and / or construction.

TRANSPORT COMMITTEE (3-year term): two full-term positions (terms expire on 01/31/2025). Meets monthly. The Commission works with the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, the Parking Committee and the Traffic Coordination Committee to advise City Council and the Planning Commission on all matters affecting transportation policy in the City of Medford and its surroundings.

TREE COMMITTEE (3-year term): three full-term positions (terms expire 31/01/2025). Meets monthly. The committee is a sub-committee of the Parks and Recreation Commission. The Committee advises the Parks and Recreation Commission on issues relating to trees in rights-of-way and in parks.

UNIFIED APPEAL BOARD (2-year term): five full-term positions (terms expire 31/01/2024). Meets only when called. The board performs the function of those boards created by the Uniform Building Codes, Plumbing Code, Electrical Code, and Mechanical Code. Members must have knowledge in the field of building.

One position for each category: member of the business community, certified entrepreneur, certified engineer, certified architect and general member.

URBAN RENEWAL AGENCY BUDGET COMMITTEE (4-year term): three full-term positions (terms expire 31/01/2026). Usually meets once in odd-numbered years to review the Medford Urban Renewal Agency budget document before forwarding its recommendation to the board. The appointed member will also sit on the Budget Committee.

WATER COMMISSION (5-year term): One full-term position (term expiring 31/01/2027). Meets twice a month. The Water Commission maintains, manages and operates the water system for the needs of the Town of Medford.

YOUNG CANDIDATES SOUGHT FOR MEDFORD COUNCILS AND COMMISSIONS

To qualify for these positions, applicants must reside within the city limits and be enrolled in one of the following schools: South Medford High, North Medford High, Cascade Christian High, St. Mary’s High, Central Medford High, Public Charter High Schools or can be homeschooled. Meets monthly on matters relating to the selection, acquisition, restoration and preventive maintenance of public art.
